I know this sounds harsh, but most of the time it is true. Most website owners don’t realize how specific they need to be when choosing the key phrases they want to rank for.
Time and time again people tell me what their top 3 key phrases are and 90% of the time I have to let them down that they will never rank for those terms.
For example, someone recently told me that their number 1 main key phrase was “astrology”. The website offers astrology readings for several countries. The site does not have a very good link building profile and the optimization is below average.
They are also competing against companies that have been around for 10 years, have thousands of links and have done great SEO on their site. It just isn’t realistic to think you will rank high for a 1 word key phrase like that.
It just isn’t going to happen, at least not for a very long time (years) and that is if you do everything better than your competitors during that time.
Instead what this website owner needs to do is realize the reality of the situation and instead target a key phrase like “astrology reading”. This takes the competition down from 66 million competing sites to 2 million.
2 million may seem like a lot but in reality it isn’t because 99.99% of those 2 million don’t really know SEO.
This new phrase is still very competitive and will drive a ton of great traffic if you get top 3 rankings in Google, but is much more realistic to obtain.
Save yourself the headache of extended failure, choose key phrases that are slightly less competitive and you will have much more long term and short term success with your internet business.
